Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q)

Q: What is the minimum wind speed required for the wind turbines to work?

A: The wind must be blowing at least 8 to 10 mph for the turbines to start running.

Q: Does the wind direction affect whether or not the turbines will work?

A: Yes. The wind turbines may not run depending upon the direction of the wind. For example, if the wind is blowing from the south/southeast, all wind turbines are running. If the wind is blowing from the north/northeast, the Parking Garage and University Center work to block some of the wind, which will affect the operation on the wind turbines.

Q: Are the wind turbines ever turned off? If so, why?

A: The small 4-kilowatt turbines located at all three locations are on at all times. However, we are still testing the three large 20-kilowatt turbines, so they may be turned off if we are experiencing unusually high or gusty winds.
